GSK Testimonial

GSK aims to be Australia's leading provider of healthcare solutions, and we recognise to achieve this we need to have exceptional leaders - not just now but in the future. Considerable time and effort goes into identifying our future leaders, and this group along with our Senior Management team form a group called ELF. Executive Leadership Forum. ELF members receive accelerated development and participate in strategic business thinking. Corporate Commandos were invited in to work with this group as the culmination of the 2008/09 plan. The session was designed to reinforce leadership skills while building on 2 previous ELF sessions that covered creative thinking and being what you want to be known for.
Wow - did they do that! John and his team ran a fast paced, challenging and highly practical day which kept us moving and thinking. Everyone had the opportunity to lead a team and we saw the teams trust in each other and their respect for each others skills grow as the day progressed. We even found out about hidden talents - who knew that a member of our Management team was the ultimate knot maker.
Feedback from the day included
"Best leadership experience I've had"
"All our people managers should do this"
"Simple but highly effective"
"Reminds you of the things that you should be doing, but aren't".

Our team had a fantastic time with your crew and as a team we benefited greatly from the experience.

What our team thought of the Corporate Commandos Experience
Although upon first sight of John & co in their camouflage gear, you could see our team’s faces changing colour as feelings of fear and trepidation set in, once we were also decked out in uniform, teamed up and got underway all of the anxious feelings subsided and we all had a ball. The camouflage gear assisted in levelling us all and creating a true team environment.

We found the course to be empowering for both our teams and on an individual level and insightful on many levels. All participants thought it was valuable that we had a competitive team activity and the Operation Air which was more focused on self and shifting your own internal movement – yet team encouragement and spirit played an integral role in both activities.

Comments from the team
“ I think we were all surprised that we could push ourselves to do something that we feared”
Sasha Bogdanov’s comments.

”It was enlightening and empowering. I got equally as much from watching everyone else tackle their fears as I did tackling my own”.
Damon Wilson, reflecting on the abseiling activity.

"I just want to write a short note to let you know how much I enjoyed myself on your courses. I really had fun. Not only did I have fun, but I got a strong sense of belonging and that everyone cared about me not only as a member of a group but as an individual. I was accepted for who and what I am and was my limitations were recognised and accepted by all.
I really felt comfortable, safe and happy and had so much fun!! I loved it!!
Thanks so much and I hope to see you all again." –
Penny Russell (received in an email post the event).

A positive step forward
We can see the impact and value of what a continued program would do and how we would benefit. The two days were exactly what our team needed at this point. It has given us just the right boost and energy needed. Relationships that had started to form you can see are now continuing in the workplace, having shared experiences with common language to draw on and remind each other of whilst at work is invaluable.

Thanks again!

WHY CORPORATE COMMANDOS?
The Business Banking division of Bendigo and Adelaide Bank Limited held a National Conference at The Forest Resort, Creswick on 26 -28 November.  As a breakout session for the conference John Spencer was asked to address the delegates on the basics of leadership, which then led to the Corporate Commandos Challenge, conducted on the grounds of the resort.  A total of 15 teams participated in the challenge.
The challenge entailed both physical and mental activities to develop the participants’ teamwork and leadership skills. The teams found that the activities emphasized several key points that they could learn and take away from the day and use in their workplace. These included:-
1. Understanding the different types of leadership found in the workplace
2. The importance of knowing your team and the dynamics of how they interact
3. The importance of delegation
4. Being able to listen to, and trust your team
5. Having the ability to be flexible in changing circumstances
The activities worked well by stimulating participants to think laterally about the problem that they were faced with. Each one required slightly different strategies for the level of teamwork, planning and execution required, to simulate the different types of problems and challenges that the participants will be faced in their workplace. The activities were very well designed to get everyone involved, and allowed everyone a chance to lead the team and be responsible for the outcome of the challenge.
John and his team were very professional and easy to work with. The challenge was a great success, with all participants finding it to be a fun and worthwhile experience.

"I was very impressed with the Corporate Commando Team, the exercises and activities planned for the day were at just the right level.
Being involved in most of the activities as a member and letting others take on the leadership role provided some interesting dynamics and outcomes.
It's an ideal team building process which takes you just far enough out of your normal comfort level to facilitate lateral thinking, although some seem to be more lateral than others. Thanks for a good experience I look forward to the next challenge. "
