CORPORATE COMMANDOS GO NORTH

We have just returned from Rockhampton in Queensland after conducting a four-day activity for Anglo Coal through Prospect Consulting at the Byfield State Forest. The course involved taking a 12-person management team from this major mining company bush for four days. During this time the team conducted a vast range of activities from basic team tasks through to major achievements such as improvised flotation and aerial rope ways focusing on developing leadership skill, interpersonal relationships, communications & operational improvement understanding strengths and weaknesses and teamwork.

This all sounds like the usual stuff however if you consider that during the course the team had to live in the field using military style camping equipment and cooking and eating individual army style rations it starts to paint the picture. The team also worked long hours conducting both day and night activities.

This course was described as a life changing event with the outcomes being exceptional.

A GREAT WAY TO END 2008 AND CHALLENGE YOUR TEAM

Lately one of the most popular activities has been the Corporate Commandos Challenge with organisations incorporating this fun and competitive activity into their conferences and now Christmas functions.  The challenge which can be conducted as a mobile course at a suitable venue to suit your requirements has proven to be a great break out session and a fun way to end the year or start 09.

The challenge caters for larger groups and each challenge is tailored to best achieve your required outcomes.

TEAM OF THE MONTH

Contexx Graduate and Undergraduate Team Building Activity Day

Contexx is an emerging national construction company, specializing in the delivery of large, complex construction projects around Australia. It has a structured Undergraduate and Graduate Programme that rotates University graduates through all areas of the business, with a deliberate and structured training plan to develop all members personally and professionally as their careers progress.
As part of the Programme, the Undergraduate and Graduate team undertook a Corporate Commandos Team Building exercise in Albert Park in September.  The course entailed challenging physical and mental activities to develop the participants’ teamwork and leadership skills. The team found that the activities emphasized several key points that they could learn and take away from the day for use in their future careers, including:

  1. Understanding the different types of leadership found in the workplace
  2. The importance of knowing your team and the dynamics of how they interact
  3. The necessity of thorough planning before undertaking a project/task, looking at alternatives and being decisive in your chosen way forward
  4. The importance of delegation
  5. Being able to listen to, and trust your team
  6. Having the ability to be flexible in changing circumstances
  7. The importance of reflection upon the completion of the task, reviewing the execution and outcome of the task, and whether alternative methods of execution would have produced a better result

The activities worked well by stimulating participants to think laterally about the problem that they were faced with. Each one required slightly different strategies for the level of teamwork, planning and execution required, to simulate the different types of problems and projects that the team will be faced with as part of our team during their careers. The activities were very well designed to get everyone involved, and allowed everyone a chance to lead the team and be responsible for the outcome of the challenge.

The day was a great success, with all participants finding it to be a fun and worthwhile experience.
